What can be improved, removed, or added
- Fading and color shifts
- Stains, scratches, creases, tears, missing sections
- Clarity, contrast, detail, and composition
- Black-and-white colorization
- More complex color work: Colorization customized to a specific film format or photographic style.
- More complex interpretation: Adding interpretive detail or expanding the composition through custom-guided AI prompting, where the source provides enough information to guide the result.
From original to a faithfully interpreted restoration
- Arrange a visit. Bring your original film, prints, and/or slides by appointment. For complex work, include related images or references that can help guide the interpretation.
- Discuss the possibilities. I’ll review what you have in mind and what is feasible, and provide a quote before any work is started. Complex projects also involve agreeing on what must remain faithful to the original and where new or interpreted detail is appropriate.
- Restore digitally. I scan the originals and relevant reference material, then work on a digital copy to create a restored file for your archive. Complex interpretations may require additional guided passes and refinement.
Finished restorations are delivered as digital files only; prints are not offered.
Results depend on the condition of the original. I’ll explain what can realistically be recovered before work begins.
